It seems dumb terminals are coming back in fashion. This is somethnig I actually saw in my last job, although they were doing it quite badly using a terrible system called Citrix – although I think Windows will be quite bad at this in general. Roll on Linux with dumb terminal / ultra slim client technology (XDMCP, LTSP) built-in!
Actually, I’ve been doing this too recently. My laptop, which I haul around Uni (mainly so I can work in lectures, otherwise I’d just use my USB hard disk), has been getting lighter in terms of what files I put on it. It’s still got a full desktop, but I tend to either use files from the Uni network or scp them from my home computer (with Dynamic DNS – and yes, I do have sshfs type things on my todo list). I’d probably go so far as running many of my programs straight off the uni servers using X forwarding if it weren’t for the horrible instability that seems to plague every graphical application on the Solaris based server.
